I am way late with my 2013 album review, which is mostly because I’ve been too lazy to write it up and only partly because the albums that were my favorite as of 12/31/2013 are maybe not my favorites anymore 2 1/2 weeks later.
But I’m getting it together, and I’m not changing my list of albums because I feel like this post is a snapshot every year, of those albums that stuck with me the most through the end of the year, and not a declaration of the greatest, most timeless records of the year. I am fiddling with song choices, etc., but I hope to have the list posted this weekend.
In the meantime, here are a few songs I liked in 2013 from albums that didn’t make my list. I may add more later.
John Fogerty – Mystic Highway: most of the songs on Fogerty’s recent “Wrote a Song for Everyone” album are rerecordings of his classic tracks in collaboration with newer artists. This is one of two original songs on the album, and it’s a great one.
Steve Earle & The Dukes (and Duchesses) – That All You Got: I’ve always liked Steve Earle. I can’t say this whole album thrilled me but this song stuck out as particularly strong.
Mark Kozelek – Young Girls: Kozelek released an album of kind of random mumbly covers this year. This song came up on shuffle this morning and I really liked it and decided to include it.
Valient Thorr – No Strings Attached: If the whole album was as fun as this song, Valient Thorr may have ended up on my list after all. But it’s not–quite–so check this track out.
