Weekend Brew Report – My Iron Brewer Entry

2011/07/11 by Jim 4 Comments

Yesterday I brewed my entry for Round 6 of Iron Brewer Batch 2. But let’s back up a minute. What’s Iron Brewer? Iron Brewer is a homebrew contest that I first read about last year and have been interested in participating in since the beginning.  Due to some e-mail issues and schedule conflicts, I was never … [Read more…]

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

2011/05/05 by Jim Leave a Comment

Today is the Mexican version of St. Patrick’s Day, in which instead of wearing green and drinking cheap beer until you black out and pee on your neighbor’s dog, in America you wear whatever you feel like wearing but drink tequila until you vomit on the party host’s phone, something I haven’t done since I … [Read more…]

Dark Lord Day 2011 wrapup

2011/05/01 by Jim 1 Comment

Well my big plans for liveblogging the event fell through. The wordpress plugin didn’t work right, or I had it misconfigured, or whatever.  So though I may have been off my game yesterday, Three Floyds put on a pretty great event. We arrived at the industrial park at around 8:30 am, 90 minutes before the … [Read more…]

The 15 best beers of winter… and I’ve only tried 3, boo hoo

2010/12/08 by Jim Leave a Comment

Beer blog “Brewpublic” has released a list of “15 of the best beers of winter” and I am left both sad and thirsty, having only sampled 3 of the listed beers in my time.  Much of this is likely due to the fact that they are based in the Pacific Northwest and I of course … [Read more…]

Mission Accomplished

2008/05/05 by Jim Leave a Comment

A couple of them actually.  Brewing, bottling, and watching men in shiny flying armor pummel the crap out of each other.  No photos though.  Hopefully I will document the next brew session photographically as well.   Well the weekend was successful, though not without its hiccups.  For example, when digging out my all-grain brewing equipment … [Read more…]

On Tap for this weekend…

2008/05/01 by Jim Leave a Comment

I plan on brewing my second batch of the year, and my first all-grain batch in a few years.  I’ve put together what I think will be a decent little recipe for an Oatmeal Stout.  I tried making on once before but I tried it as an extract-based recipe, and you just can’t do extract … [Read more…]

Chicago Beer Meetup

2008/04/30 by Jim Leave a Comment

Last weekend John, the Organizer for the Chicago Beer Meetup group on meetup.com, stepped down as organizer.  I wasn’t sure if I was the man for the job, but I am definitely the man for the beer, so I stepped up.  I am the new Organizer and I’ve scheduled my first event. Chicago Beer Meetup … [Read more…]

Beer SCIENCE and HISTORY

2008/04/07 by Jim Leave a Comment

Brewing went well on Saturday and I’m very excited about this batch.  I’m closing in on perfecting the brown ale, or at least the brown ale the way I want to drink it. Also, today is the 75th anniversary of 3.2% beer becoming legal again after Prohibition.  Prohibition wasn’t officially repealed until later in 1933.  … [Read more…]

No Fuggles. Shit.

2008/04/03 by Jim Leave a Comment

So apparently the Fuggle hops, my absolute favorite, are one of the varieties affected by the hop shortage, about which I am fairly ignorant so I probably need to school myself.  Anyway, I’ll be using Willamette instead… but I’ll be thinking of Fuggle.
